The challenge of water management in Spanish agriculture

In Spain, fruit growing faces significant challenges related to water, which is why various technologies and approaches are being implemented to reduce water consumption and improve efficiency in the field. Some of these solutions include:

  1. Drip irrigation: Drip irrigation is a technique that delivers water directly to the roots of plants in small, constant amounts. This method reduces water loss due to evaporation and runoff, allowing for precise and efficient application of water while preventing over-irrigation.
  2. Smart irrigation sensors and systems: Sensor technology and smart irrigation systems make it possible to accurately monitor and control crop water needs. Sensors measure soil moisture, temperature, and other parameters, while automated systems adjust irrigation based on these data.
    This prevents unnecessary watering and ensures efficient water use.
  3. Precision agriculture: Precision agriculture uses advanced technology such as satellite imagery, artificial intelligence, and geographic information systems (GIS) to obtain detailed information about crop needs.
    This enables more precise irrigation management by applying water only in the areas that need it and in the right amount.
  4. Water reuse: Water treatment and recycling systems are being implemented on farms to reuse wastewater.
    This involves treating the water used for irrigation and recirculating it in the crops. This practice helps conserve water resources and reduce dependence on external water sources.
  5. Drought-resistant crops: Research and development of more drought-tolerant crop varieties are essential to cope with water scarcity.
    Genetic improvement techniques are being developed to create plant varieties that are more tolerant to water shortages and capable of maintaining good yields even under drought conditions.
